Аннотация: Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) with VVER type reactors are under construction in Russia and abroad since 60-th of the past century (the first VVER type power unit was commissioned at Novovoronezh NPP in 1965). At present Nuclear power Plants (the design NPP – 2006) with reactor plant VVER-1200 are successfully operating at Novovoronezh NPP-2 (Units 1 and 2) and Leningrad NPP-2 (Unit 1). The shaping factor enabling contract award and VVER type NPPs construction is availability of advanced (generation 3+) VVER-1200 reference power units with proved high safety level. However, these plans have the right to exist only under one condition – unconditional NPP safety assurance. High safety level is assured by reliability of the main equipment and availability of special purpose safety systems as well as beyond design accident management facilities (not available in previous generations power units). NPP acquiring the following features can be referred to 3+ generation: — extensive safety systems including those which are based on passive operation principles; — double containment to mitigate accidents consequences and protect against external impacts; — special systems and equipment for severe accidents management (corium catcher or reactor pressure vessel cooling system); — improved performance indicators.
